Osteopathy for shoulder pain
Shoulder pain is a common problem and may be caused by a number of conditions, for example
-
Rotator Cuff - this is the name given to the structures that hold the shoulder in place. Pain may be in the shoulder or upper arm, especially when using the sore muscles, lifting the arm or laying on it. It may be caused by an injury, overuse or even wear and tear.
-
Osteoarthritis - the joint cartilage gets worn away over time, eventually leading to the 2 bones rubbing together and causing pain.
-
Shoulder instability - dislocation or lax ligaments cause excessive movement of the shoulder joint. Usually due to trauma, and may be predisposed by hypermobility
-
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) - pain and gradual stiffening of the shoulder capsule, limiting range of movement. It has 3 stages - freezing 6 months, with severe pain and reducing mobility, frozen for 6 months and then unfreezing for 6 months where resolution occurs. This is a long term condition lasting from 18 months to 2 years.
-
Referred shoulder pain - the pain may be coming from your neck or upper back.
Shoulder problems can take a long time to resolve as they can be very complex due to the many different tissues that can contribute to the problem.
I will use gentle techniques such as massage, rhythmical movements or cranial osteopathy to release muscle tension and improve mobility in the shoulder, neck and back.
Treatment is tailored to your specific needs, and might involve looking at other areas such as your arms, low back, pelvis and hips as well. I may offer postural advice and stretching.
Sometimes imaging or other tests maybe required to make a diagnosis. In this case I will refer you to your GP or other specialist for any investigations.
